Rhinestone is also called strass in european languages after the Alsatian jeweller Georg Friedrich Strass who had the idea to imitate diamonds by coating the lower side of glass with metal powder.
Rhinestones were originally rock crystals (quarts) gathered from the river Rhine but the availability was greatly increased with Strass' method from 1775.
